Texas State Independent Living Conference Comes to San Antonio

Mar 15, 2016 | Articles and Publications

The 2016 Texas State Independent Living Conference will be held April 3 – 5, 2016 in San Antonio at the Hilton San Antonio Airport Hotel. This year’s theme is “Innovate,” and the conference is devoted to discussing the issues, technologies and services that empower disabled people to live independently.

This annual conference is a three-day event hosted by the Texas State Independent Living Council (SILC) with close to 30 interactive speakers and exhibitors. Several engaging events such as social photomixers provide the opportunity for participants to mix and mingle with one another, setting the tone for collaboration, creative connections and fun in an energizing atmosphere with music and appetizers.

The conference meetings are a combination of breakout and general sessions. The sessions break down into four tracks: independent living services, assistive technology, legal and legislative updates, and general tracks. Learn more about the tracks here. Videos of conference sessions will be captioned and translated into American Sign Language (ASL) for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Literature will be available in both large print and braille for those who are blind or vision-impaired.

In recent years the conference has had close to 300 attendees and 30 booths. The exhibit floor will showcase leading-edge exhibitors that range from health care providers to those who offer assistive technology, legal assistance, group support, transportation, education, transition in Independent Living and much more.

The goals for this event are to empower attendees to learn about Independent Living, encounter new services and connect, collaborate and create ideas to support Independent Living principles.

The Texas SILC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to ensure that all Texans with disabilities have access to quality Independent Living services. The Texas SILC upholds the principles of the Independent Living movement: peer support, self-help, self-determination, equality and positive systemic change. All states have a State Independent Living Council (SILC).

DIS will be providing sign language interpreters and captioning at the event. For information on accessible accommodations and needs at the conference, email conference@txsilc.org.
